Which BRITA water filter bottle is right for you?
For everyday freshness, the BRITA Model Vital is the simplest water filter bottle to live with. For the longest filter life and smart features, choose the BRITA LARQ iQ. Between those two poles sit three more bottles – and the right one depends on how your day actually runs. ━━━ If you drink while you move – cycling, training, one hand on the handlebar – the BRITA Model Active swaps the Vital’s screw cap for a sports mouthpiece you can open one-handed, plus a loop that clips to a rucksack or saddle. Both share the same MicroDisc filter and fit most bike bottle cages. If you want BRITA LARQ filtration without electronics, the BRITA LARQ Filter Bottle carries the same insulated stainless-steel body as the iQ, with a straw, in 0.68 or 1 litre. And if you would rather not commit yet, the BRITA LARQ Essential starts as a straightforward insulated bottle and accepts a Filter Upgrade Kit or the smart iQ Cap whenever you are ready – the one bottle in the range built to change its mind later. Already own a LARQ bottle? Then an upgrade module, not a new bottle, is usually the honest answer. A few limits, stated plainly. If most of your water is drunk at home, a filter jug or tap solution serves you better than any bottle – our Water Filter Guide points the way. There is no lightweight unfiltered plastic bottle in this range: the no-filter path ends at the stainless-steel Essential, and the 1-litre size comes only in steel, at 490 grams. The Model line has no smart upgrade path. And the two filter systems share more than the formats suggest: both filter chlorine and taste-impairing substances and – as far as contained in tap water – PFAS¹ ² and traces of certain pesticides, herbicides and hormones. What genuinely separates them is endurance: a MicroDisc carries you through up to 60 litres or four weeks, a LARQ filter through up to 150 litres or eight weeks. There are five criteria which separate the bottles: what the filter removes, how long it lasts, what the bottle is made of, which smart features you want, and how it handles on a normal day. Here is how they compare. What the filters remove: a shared baseline A filtered water bottle earns its place through what the filter actually does – and here the two systems sit closer together than their formats suggest. The MicroDisc filter in the Model Vital and Model Active works with activated carbon from coconut shells. It filters chlorine, PFAS¹ and other taste-impairing substances, and trace impurities such as certain pesticides, herbicides and hormones – as far as contained in tap water. The BRITA LARQ filter in the iQ and the Filter Bottle combines activated carbon fibre with granulated carbon: it improves taste and reduces PFAS by up to 98%² ³ alongside chlorine and trace impurities such as certain pesticides, herbicides and hormones⁴ ⁵. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium stay in the water with either filter. Two specifics differ: the MicroDisc additionally reduces microparticles from 15 µm; the different test references (JWPAS B.210 for the MicroDisc¹, NSF/ANSI 42, 53 & 401 standards for the LARQ filter⁴). If what comes out of the filter decided the choice alone, it would end in a tie – which is exactly why the next criterion carries the weight. Filter capacity and replacement rhythm A MicroDisc lasts up to 60 litres or four weeks in a bottle, while the BRITA LARQ filter delivers up to 150 litres or eight weeks of filtration. The right choice depends on your usage habits and preference for filter replacement frequency. Replacements are simple: use MicroDiscs for the Model line and the BRITA LARQ Filter Pack for the LARQ line. Used MicroDiscs can be disposed of in household waste. Material, weight and insulation All three LARQ bottles are double-walled 18/8 stainless steel with a matt powder coating – an insulated water bottle with straw that keeps water cold for up to 24 hours. The 0.68-litre body weighs 420 grams, the 1-litre version 490; the bottles are dishwasher-safe, the iQ Cap and the LARQ filter are not. The Model bottles take the opposite route: lightweight plastic – 152 grams for the Active, 176 for the Vital – dishwasher-safe up to 55 °C, and in the Active’s case shatterproof: the bottle you stop worrying about in a gym bag. Neither line is specified for hot drinks. Smart features and upgrade paths The BRITA LARQ iQ is the smart water bottle of the range: PureVis UV-C technology eliminates 99.99% of bacteria in the water⁶ – a self-cleaning water bottle in the literal sense, activating every two hours to keep the bottle fresh between regular washes – while the iQ Cap tracks how much you drink and syncs with the BRITA app⁷. One charge lasts up to three weeks via USB-C. The same iQ Cap retrofits onto the BRITA LARQ Essential Bottle and the BRITA LARQ Filter Bottle; the Filter Upgrade Kit adds filtration to the Essential. The whole Model line stays deliberately analogue. Handling for sport, travel and every day A sports water bottle earns the name through details: the Model Active opens one-handed mid-ride and carries an attachment loop; the Model Vital keeps a classic screw cap for desk and daypack, and at 7.2 cm across both fit most bike cages. As a travel water bottle, the LARQ line trades weight for insulation and a straw – removable if you prefer to swig – with a wide mouth for ice cubes and a detachable soft-touch handle. At 7.45 cm, the 0.68-litre bottles are worth checking against your cage; the 1-litre size, at 8.3 cm, travels better in a bag – a water bottle with filter sized for long days between refills. FAQ
Which water filter is right for my home?
Which water filter is right for my home?
For most households, a filter jug is the right starting point: no installation, low running costs, and filtered water within minutes. A filter tap suits kitchens with high daily use, a filter bottle covers water on the go, and a home dispenser adds chilled and hot water on demand. The Water Filter Guide narrows it to one recommendation in three questions.
Are water filters worth it for tap water in the UK?
Are water filters worth it for tap water in the UK?
If limescale, taste or better tea and coffee matter in your household, a water filter is worth it – that is what filtration measurably changes. It is not a safety requirement: UK tap water is already rigorously tested. The honest test is your kettle and your cup – visible scale and a chlorine note are the two problems a filter is built to solve.
Do water filter jugs really make a difference?
Do water filter jugs really make a difference?
Yes – within what they are designed to do. Inside the cartridge, ion exchange reduces carbonate hardness, the driver of limescale, while activated carbon reduces substances that affect taste, such as chlorine. The result is not medically “purer” water; it is water with less scale potential and a cleaner taste — a difference you notice in kettles, tea and coffee.
Which water filter cartridge is best for hard water?
Which water filter cartridge is best for hard water?
In a hard-water area, choose a filter whose cartridge is specified for limescale reduction – in the BRITA range, that is the MAXTRA PRO Limescale Expert. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium; an ion-exchange stage sized for it reduces scale before it ever reaches the kettle. The Water Filter Guide factors your hardness level into its recommendation.
What's the difference between a filter jug and a filter tap?
What's the difference between a filter jug and a filter tap?
A filter jug needs no installation and filters by the jugful – flexible, portable, easy to start with. A filter tap is fitted once and then delivers filtered water on demand, which suits kitchens where filtered water is used constantly, from cooking to refilling bottles. Volume and convenience decide it: occasional use favours the jug, constant use the tap.
Which water filter bottle is right for me?
Which water filter bottle is right for me?
For everyday use – commuting, office, gym – a compact water filter bottle with a taste-focused filter is the right choice: it reduces substances that affect taste, such as chlorine, as you drink, turning any tap into a refill point. For travel and long days outdoors, capacity and refill frequency matter more than compactness. The Water Filter Bottle Guide matches bottle type, filter and daily routine in a few questions.

Which filter cartridge fits which BRITA jug?
Which filter cartridge fits which BRITA jug?
All current BRITA jugs take the MAXTRA PRO cartridge family – one format, chosen by need: PURE PERFORMANCE as the standard, LIMESCALE EXPERT for hard-water areas. MAXTRA PRO cartridges also fits jugs built for the earlier MAXTRA+ generation, so an older jug does not need replacing. The model name printed on your cartridge or jug base confirms the fit.
